Maybe it's not so bad being eight
miles from Duke University after all.
There was a time in which Duke was
Carolina's most important ally in a quiet
c=paign against cultural deprivation in
Straight to the point, we got their art
museum because we were willing to
house the collector with the collection.
That and the fact that we - or, at least,
our lawyer - took a big gulp and told a
judge that the two schools "are as alike as
two peas in a pod."
The Ackland Art Museum is near the
top of any list of the extracurriculars that
students, and Chapel Hill visitors, ought
to take in. What's not as well known is
the story of how the museum, and
William Hayes Ackland himself, came to
this town and not the other one.
He came into the world, specifically
Tennessee, as William Hayes Acklen in
