Three and a halfyears ago, soon after Jenn Windley ' 97 finished her degree in journalism at Carolina, the
Belhaven native was visiting Ocracoke
Lighthouse on the North Carolina Outer
Banks when she lost her UNC class ring.
"When I lost it, I was crushed," says
Windley. "We searched the parking lot, the
Jeep and the grassy areas. My mom even
came over on the ferry the next day to use
her metal detector. The guards, of course,
told her she couldn't detect on a state park
site, but when they heard the story, they let
her keep looking."
But it was to no avail. Windley and her
family just assumed that someone had found
it and walked off with it. For Christmas that
year, her mother gave her a new class ring.
Imagine Windley's surprise when, in late
October 2000, sitting at home in Wilmington
where she works as communications direc-
tor for the American Red Cross, she received
a phone call from a family that had found a
ring while on vacation the week before.
Mirianl Tedder, who lives near the South
Carolina border in Columbus County,
explained that she had tracked Windley down
from the name on her ring and through

(MS) - even finding another Jennifer
Windley who lives in Utah in the process.
"The whole family got into the search,"
Windley says."They found the ring at the
lighthouse in Ocracoke. It was lying in the
dressed up for Halloween, but she still sported
both her class rings.
open with just a lirtle sand covering it. It was
actually there for three and a half years."
And tllrough hurricanes and storms and
tourists' tramping, Windley is happy to
report that it's "still in perfect shape."
"When Ms. Tedder called me, I described
myoId ring in infinite detail while looking
at the replacement ring," she says. "It is
exactly the same."
Windley told a group ofyoung alumni
over a GAA Web site about the improbable
recovery. "Just thought I'd remind everyone
that it pays to keep your records updated at
UNC, and there are some good peop1e left
in this world," she said.
So now that she has the old ring back,
what to do with the new one? Perhaps
Jennifer Windley of Utah could use a new
Perhaps - but Windley of Wilmington
has no plans to allow either out of her sight.
"These days I wear both rings," she says,
"one on the left and one on the right."
