James Tully Beatty (' 57 AB) of Charlotte, an
executive search consultant, was named state
chairman for the Leukemia Society's 1998
fund-raiser, "Breakfast with the Champions."
Beatty also was the opening session speaker
for the N.C. Bankers Association annual meeting.
He hosts a TV interview show, Charlotte Talks
with Jim Beatty. Shirley Weaver Bum-
gardner (' 57 BSPHR) of Suffolk, Va., proved
to be the perfect match for a longtime friend,
Margaret Rowe, who needed a kidney transplant.
Bumgardner, the first and only person tested,
said, "Had the tables been turned, Margaret
would have given me a kidney." Chester
Clark Davis (' 58 AB) has retired after serving
21 years in the U.S. Navy and 18 years serving
the intelligence community. Davis and his wife,
Andrea Stalvey Davis (' 58, ' 59 AB), live in
Arlington,Va. David Stanley Flowers (' 52
BSBA) of Hickory, a certified public accountant,
was named an honorary member of the Ameri-
can Institute of Certified Public Accountants.
He is retired as secretary of The Flowers Auto
Parts Co. William Elliott Hickman (' 59
AB) of Raleigh has retired as senior vice pres-
ident of Austin Quality Foods Inc. in Cary. ~
Allen Franklin Holt (' 57 BSBA) of Asheboro,
executive vice president and general manager
of Randolph Electric Membership Corp., has
been elected vice chairman of the Randolph
County Economic Development Corp. ~
David Caldwell Howard (' 52 AB) of Gulf
Shores, Ala., has published a book, Paula Is My
Name, that chronicles the last 10 years ofa
woman's struggle with cystic fibrosis. The book
is distributed with an envelope to encourage
donations to the International Association of

of Charlotte, longtime chief executive of Home
Federal Savings, has retired following tbe thrift's
merger with Concord's First Charter Corp.
Through 2001, King will be a consultant for
First Charter. W. Thomas Parsons Sr. (' 58,
' 59 BSBA) of Bristol, Tenn., a 35-year veteran
of the insurance industry, has been elected to
the board of directors of the Virginia Financial
Services Corp. Henry Estil Royall (' 52 MA)
of Chapel Hill recently celebrated his 94th
birthday-after he finished pumping iron and
riding a stationary bicycle at a local gym.
Royall, a fixture at The Spa Health Club, works
out three times a week, follows up with a swim,
then sings old classics in the gym showers. ~
Harvey George Tilles (' 54 AB) of High Point,
the town's first podiatrist, has retired after 39
years in business. Tilles is also a national phi-
latelic judge. Roberts Edgar Timberlake
(' 59 BSIR) of Lexington, CEO of Bob Tim-
berlake Inc., has been named the N.C. Press
Association's North Carolinian of the Year for
his contributions to the state's art community
and furniture industry. Robert Franklin
Warwick (' 58 BSBA) of Wilmington, a member
of the UNC Board of Governors, has been rec-
ognized for his longtime support ofUNC-
Wilmington. At a celebration of the university'S
50th anniversary the University Center was
named in his honor.

(' 50 BSCOM), 73, of Gastonia, owner of
BrumJey Printing; Aug. 9, 1998. Brumley was
a WWII Air Force veteran. Donn Louis
Dieter (' 50 BSST, ' 58 MED, ' 68 MED, ' 78 EDD),
72, of Raleigh, educator; Aug. 12, 1998. Dieter,
a Navy veteran ofboth WWII and the Korean
War, spent more than 36 years serving the state
as a public school educator and administrator
and later as a consultant to local school systems.
He also served a year as associate director of
the National Association of Biology Teachers.
