'00 PhB-HENRY REYNOLDS, 83, died July 2,
1960 of a heart attack in Greenshoro, where
he had served from 1933 nntil his retirement
in 1956 as Clerk of the U.S. Middle District
Court for North Carolina. For many years
he was regularly pre,ent for Ch'pel Hill
Commencements, particularly meetings of the
Old Students Club which he served as Presi-
dent. A native of Winston-Salem, he studied
law at Columbia followin!r UNC graduation
and located in 1903 in Wilk""boro. Survivors
include his wife, tbe former Sara Tulhert of
Wilkesboro; a daughter, Mrs. J. A. Mill.
(Sue Reynolds '42); and a son, Henry Reyn-
olds, Jr. '48-all of Greenshoro.

BENNETT, 79, widely known soil scientist as
the "Father of Soil Conservation," died July
7, 1960 in a bospital at Burlinlrton to which
he had been taken from his home at Falls
Church, Va. to be near his son, a physician.
A native of Wadeshoro, Dr. Bennett became
a chemist with the old U.S. Bureou of Soils
following gradu1tion at UNC. He rose to
world-wide eminence. In 1933 President
Roosevelt made bim Chief of the Soil Erosion
Service of the Deoartment of Tnterior. Since
retirement in 19~2 as Chief of the Department of A!rriculture's Soil Conservation Service, he had spent time workin!r with foreign
governments on soil prohlems and in con-tiruin/t bis writin/ts. Survivors include his
wife, the former Elizaheth Brown of Roanoke, Va.; a dau~hter; a son, Dr. H. H.
Bennett, Jr. '42, Burlington; and two sisters.
'07-COMMODORE THOMAS COUNCIL, 73, died
July 13, 1960 in Durham of a cerebral
hemorrha/te. A native of Chatham County, he
studied pharmacy at UNC in 1905-06 and
joined the l,te Germain Bernard in a drug
stcre in Durham. Auxiliary to their pharmacy
husiness the two partners developed a head-
ache remedy which they began to market as
"BC"-using the initial of each. From this
belrinning grew the now nationwide known
B.C. Remedv Co.- founded in 1910-of
which Council was the first and only Presi-
dent in a period of 50 years. Active in
many areas of Durham life, Mr. Council
